Kayak Florida's second largest lake and discover bald eagles soaring overhead!
The Volusia County Explore Volusia program invites you to join Environmental Specialist Tommy Nordmann on a paddle on the second largest lake in Florida. Learn about the military history of the lake, and explore canals and streams that feed into it. Participants will also learn about the Volusia Forever program, and we’ll search for bald eagles and other native wildlife.
**Important note: Please arrive 30 minutes prior to organize gear and complete a waiver. Waivers must be completed in full to participate in the program. You can download and complete a waiver ahead of time by visiting Explore Volusia.
** Some map apps and GPS devices will take you to the incorrect location. Use the following directions to guide you to the kayak launch.
From Nine Mile Point Road, take a right onto Willow Cove Road at the pole barn surrounded by a chain link fence. (If you've arrived at the parking area by the pavilion and fishing pier, you've gone too far.)
Turn left onto Jennings Road. You will go through an open, orange, metal gate.
Turn right onto Powerline Road.
Look for the wooden fences and turn left into the parking area.
** Nine Mile Point Road is a very long dirt road, and road conditions can vary depending on rainfall and maintenance. At times, the road can be very bumpy and you'll need to travel at slow speeds. Please allow yourself ample time.
** Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are recommended due to soft sand when roads are dry and mud when roads are wet.
