Marine Discovery Center - Homeschool Fieldtrip

Students and adults alike will discover the Indian River Lagoon by land and sea! Dolphins, manatees, birds, and other marine life may be encountered as the naturalist describes the lagoon and inhabitants aboard our 40 person pontoon. Participants will disembark onto a remote island in the lagoon to explore in depth. Each month will focus on a different topic, providing an engaging educational experience.
This program is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. once each month throughout the 2022-23 school year.
K-12th grade | $25 per person
Minimum number of participants required for program to occur.
Students must be accompanied by an adult. Students AND adults must pay and register as participants.
2022-23 Schedule:
September 12 • Where Do We Belong?
Learning about scientific classification and how it helps us understand the animal kingdom.
October 12 • Water Cycle
Reviewing states of water and how water cycles through and environment.
November 8 • Climate and Weather
Sounds the same right? Wrong! Discussing the differences between climate, weather, weathering, erosion and how humans influence these processes.
December 13 • Phabulous Photosynthesis
Energy form the sun drives most life on Earth! Let’s explore how all food webs begin with the sun.
January 10 • Migration Mania
When temperatures plunge so do birds . . . down to warmer weather! Why do animals migrate and what are the best ways to help them thrive during their migrations?
February 7 • Creature Connection
As we cruise through the Indian River Lagoon, we will drag a trawl net to see what is swimming behind us and discuss the critters that inhabit the most biodiverse estuary in North America.
March 14 • Where’d My Claw Go?
Arthropods of the Indian River Lagoon range in size, color, shape, and habitat. Let’s meet some of these creative critters!
April 11 • Oh to Be a Bivalve
Clams, oysters, mussels, oh my! These critters do more for their ecosystems than just making pretty shells.
May 9 • Creature Connection
