Mary McLeod Bethune Home

Known as "First Lady of Negro America" Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune rose from the daughter of enslaved parents to found a great university and serve as a four time presidential advisor. We invite you to take a glimpse inside of the home that she gave to her foundation to be "a place to awaken people and to have them realize that there is something in the world they can do" as she once stated.

Built around 1904-05 the home was purchased in 1913 for Mrs. Bethune and would be the place that she lived until her passing in 1955. Each year 1000's of visitors come from around the world to gain the "Bethune Experience" by walking in the steps of such a great woman. The home tells the story of visitors including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson and Ralph Bunche. The historic site also features a large collection of original personal artifacts of the college founder and political activist. December 2, 1974 the historic home received the designation of National Historic Landmark by the United States Secretary of Interior.
