NEW YEAR, NEW YOU HIKE
2:00-3:30 p.m.
Sunday, January 7th
OUTDOOR: Begin 2024 by burning off some of those holiday calories as we explore the beauty of
Lyonia Preserve on a guided hike. Breathe some fresh air and focus on the goals you have set for
yourself this new year. Participants should dress for the weather, bring water and wear closed toed
shoes. We will be hiking on unpaved, sugar sand trails for approximately 1.5 miles. This program is
recommended for ages 8 and up.

WINTER SUNSET OVER LYONIA HIKE
4:00-5:00 p.m.
Thursday, January 11th
OUTDOOR: Break up your work week or wrap up your day with this fun and relaxing stroll into
Lyonia Preserve. LEC staff will be your guides as you enjoy a picturesque sunset in the great
outdoors. Please dress for the weather, carry water and a flashlight, and wear closed toe shoes. This
program is recommended for ages 8 and up.

LYONIA PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Saturday, January 13th
INDOOR/OUTDOOR: Lyonia Preserve has unlimited opportunities for photographing birds, reptiles,
and plants. Volunteers from West Volusia Audubon Society lead this monthly program series, which
includes class instruction as well as field opportunities to hone your skills. All skill levels and ages are
welcome!

ROCKIN’ & READING WITH RUSTY
10:00-11:00 a.m.
Saturday, January 13th
INDOOR: Calling kids ages 5-8 to join LEC’s Mascot, Rusty the Scrub Jay, for story time and
interactive fun! Learn about the threatened Florida Scrub Jay and bring your camera to capture a
photo with Rusty!

NATURE AT NIGHT: Star Party
6:00-8:00 p.m.
Thursday, January 18th
INDOOR/OUTDOOR: Derek Demeter, Director of the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State
College, will be hosting an evening of stargazing. Telescopes will be set up for guests to view objects
in addition to a laser guided tour of the constellations in the night sky. An indoor program will be
provided if we have inclement weather. This program is recommended for ages 8 and up.

L.I.F.E
(Learning Information on Fighting Extinction)
10:00-11:00 a.m.
Saturday, January 20th
INDOOR: Join us for our monthly series L.I.F.E. (Learning Information on Fighting Extinction) where
we will be traveling around the globe to learn about threatened and endangered species and the
conservation efforts being made to help them survive. Each program will consist of a lesson and a
craft or art project. This month we will be learning more about Key deer. Recommended for ages 6
and up.

SNOW SCIENCE SUNDAY
2:00-2:30 p.m.
Sunday, January 21st
INDOOR/OUTDOOR: There’s nothing better than using the changing of the seasons to have some fun
exploring the science of snow. It may not be snowing in our area, but we can still enjoy making our
very own melting snowman. This program is appropriate for families and children ages 7 and older.

BE MY UPCYCLED VALENTINE
10:30-11:30 a.m.
Saturday, January 27th
INDOOR: Get a jump start on a unique gift for your favorite valentine! We’ll be upcycling glass bottles
and learning to make roses from pipe cleaners. All materials will be provided courtesy of The Friends
of Lyonia Environmental Center. One lucky participant will win a pipe cleaner flower bouquet! This
program is recommended for ages 10 and up. Space is limited so register early.


POPCORN AND A MOVIE: CHASING ICE
Time: 2:00-3:30 p.m.
Saturday, January 27th
INDOOR: Witness the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering
undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the
brutal Arctic, a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers was captured. This film is rated PG-
13 and recommended for adult audiences. Popcorn will be provided free of charge by The Friends of
Lyonia Environmental Center.

WINTER BY THE WETLAND HIKE
10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Sunday, January 28th
INDOOR/OUTDOOR: Look for signs of winter during this hike to Lyonia Preserve’s large ephemeral
wetland. We’ll discuss the different plant and animal species that depend on this intermittent body of
water. Bring water and wear long pants and closed toe shoes that may get wet.
